The odds on Pique joining José Mourinho at Old Trafford have been slashed by Ladbrokes from 16/1 to 10/1 after a surge of bets were placed on the Spaniard's future. Noisy neighbours Manchester City are second favourites to secure his signature at 14/1.
Despite bringing in Eric Bailly from Villarreal already, United are looking to bolster their backline further to try and strengthen every area of their squad to challenge for the title this time around.
Louis
van Gaal's tenure proved that fifth is not good enough for the Red
Devils and the boardroom are seemingly willing to spend money to bring
success back to Old Trafford under José Mourinho. The Special One has
already splashed the cash on Bailly, as well as fellow new signings
Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mhkitaryan.
It remains to be seen whether or not Pique's move is a serious possibility or is merely speculation, but the 29-year-old does have history with United. He made his Reds debut back in 2004 against Crewe and played a grand total of 23 times for United before moving to Spain.
And
having won everything available to him with Barcelona, there could be a
case of some unfinished business in the Premier League at Manchester
United.
The rumours of Pique rejoining United comes in the middle of other transfer gossip that Paul Pogba could also return to the Theatre of Dreams this season.
A Ladbrokes spokesman said: "It might not be just Paul Pogba returning to familiar surroundings at United this summer, with the Reds now favourites to pluck Pique from Barca."
