Phil Thompson has revealed the two players that he would like to see former club Liverpool bring in this summer.
The Liverpool Echo reported on Thompson's summer wishlist after the Reds legend previewed the 2016/17 campaign on Sky Sports.
The 62-year-old said that he would like manager Jurgen Klopp to bolster
his striking options by attempting to bring Napoli's Gonzalo Higuain to
Anfield.
And the ex-defender also
stated that he would love to see Liverpool reunite with Bayern Munich
midfielder Xabi Alonso, despite the Spaniard entering the twilight of
his playing career.
Thompson said: "If Christian Benteke and Mario Balotelli go, then I'd still like to see another striker come in.
"I've been saying for a few years that I'd like to see Liverpool try and tempt Gonzalo Higuain away from Napoli.
"Another one, after Pep Guardiola
left Bayern, would be to bring Xabi Alonso back to do a Gary McAllister
and spend his final few years with Liverpool.
"I
think it would help Emre Can and Jordan Henderson understand the role
and I still think he's one of the best passers around. I know he loved
every minute of his time with Liverpool."
Thompson was also quizzed on who he'd like to see given more time to showcase their talents in L4.
The seven-time league champion
replied that Wales midfielder Joe Allen should be handed further
opportunities to shine for Liverpool, in spite of rumours linking him
with a move away.
