REVEALED: Premier League Announce New Measures to Try and Improve 'Unacceptable' On-Field Behaviour

Chelsea v West Bromwich Albion - Premier League

The Premier League has officially announced a string of new measures that will be introduced for the 2016/17 in a bid to improve on-field conduct from players and coaches towards match officials after describing "intolerable behaviour" as having reached an "unacceptable level".

The notice comes as a joint initiative from the Premier League, Football League and FA in a bid to ensure that English is known around the world not only for its competitiveness, but also "its fairness and for being played in the right spirit".

Looking to stamp out 'disrespectful conduct', which has seen players surround and confront match officials in an increasingly aggressive manner in recent seasons, the Professional Game Match Officials (PGMO) has been asked to be stricter and take stronger action should such incidents take place in the future.

Yellow cards will be issued to players who show "visibly disrespectful behaviour" to a match official; those who react "aggressively" to decisions; any who confronts an official "face to face"; and any who "runs towards an official to contest a decision".

Such instances were seen time and time again last season, often from a small number of repeat offenders, and it is hoped that stronger action will help stamp out that kind of behaviour.

Players must be shown a red card if they confront a match official and use "offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures", many instances of which have often gone unpunished in the past.

Giving the example of a shirt tug to attract an official's attention, it has also been confirmed that any player making "non-aggressive" physical contact with an official must be yellow carded. Any who make physical contact in an "aggressive or confrontational" manner will be dismissed immediately.

When groups of players surround a match official, a yellow card will be shown to "at least one player" when there are two or more from the same team. Clubs will continue to be sanctioned by the FA as normal - a disturbing number were fined last season for failing to control their players.

Coaches and players must also now behave more appropriately in the technical area and on the sidelines because the "Technical Area Code of Conduct will be more rigorously enforced" where it perhaps wasn't before. On top of that match officials must "retain professional detachment" from players and club staff.
