Everton
are in the market for a new goalkeeper, with former shot-stopper Tim
Howard moving back to Major League Soccer in America, while Joel Robles
has looked below par since he became Everton's number one.
Begovic
was widely expected to act as an understudy to Chelsea's Thibaut
Courtois when he transferred to the Stamford Bridge from Stoke last
year, but the Bosnia and Herzegovina keeper got his fair share of
first-team opportunities during the 2015-16 season, thanks to Courtois'
injuries and indifferent form. He made 25 appearances in all
competitions as Chelsea endured a disappointing season.
The
29-year-old is now expected to move to Merseyside with Everton, as
Chelsea look set to complete the signing of AC Milan goalie Diego Lopez.
Once Begovic has completed his move to Everton, Chelsea will announce
the signing of the former Real Madrid keeper.
Begovic's transfer to Everton will set the Toffees back about £8m,
and he is expected to become the club's first-choice keeper. Begovic
reportedly began to feel fed up regarding his situation at Chelsea, and
has been allowed to speak with Everton over a potential transfer.
Everton
boss Ronald Koeman is looking to revive Everton's fortunes after a poor
2015-16 Premier League season, where they continuously looked
vulnerable defensively, and Koeman will be hoping that Begovic can help
to address some of those vulnerabilities.
